A blog about common struggles and triggers relating to mental health.
That was a slogan in the 1980s and early 1990s. It was used in television advertisement to encourage people away from drug use. Today, we need to Just Say No to the multitude of things trying to consume our time, energy, and families.
Families today are struggling more than ever to “Keep up with the Joneses." Parents feel the burden to give their children the ideal TV childhood and upbringing, and we all want our children to be better than the ‘Jones’ child next door or in class with our own. We allow jealousy to overcome us, we allow envy to burden us, and we become willing to sacrifice good things in life to chase the BIG DREAM.
Who doesn’t want the best for their child, to be a movie star, professional athlete, singer, or to get into an ivy league college? As parents we can wear our child’s accomplishments like a badge of honor to flaunt to the Joneses, but at what cost? Our society has put a lot of pressure on kids and parents to succeed in the public image or on Facebook, but how are we succeeding behind closed doors or in the eyes of God? We need to learn to “Just Say No” to those things trying to pull us apart and pull us away from God and the purpose He has in our lives. We also need to “Just Say No” to how we measure the success of our children and families.
When we stop the comparing and start thanking God for what is right in front of us, we will live an abundantly more grateful life, and we will truly sense the true joyfulness of knowing the Lord. Our mental health won’t suffer the constant need to compare and the suffering that comes with the feeling of inadequacy.
