Out of the Valley

A blog about common struggles and triggers relating to mental health.

Asking for help is just that....

Normalizing asking for help.

Would you find it odd to ask for directions when stopping for gas on a road trip and your
phone dies?

Unacceptable to ask your waiter "What's good here?" at a restaurant you've never been to?

Getting a price check on an item unmarked or in the wrong place in a store?

There are so many areas of life that the outcome of success is simply dependent on getting
help.

Assistance, aid, favor, clarification, relief, alleviate, remedy.

From the beginning of life, we are dependent on some form of help. Our culture has
conditioned us to frown upon continuing that post adulthood. There is an entire portion of
the career field dedicated to just this small concept: the helping field. Sometimes we just
need a little help to get to where we can ask for it. No matter the issue or situation, your
health -both mental and physical- is something that cannot be put on hold until it's easier or
more convenient.

Steps toward asking for help:

1. Ask a trusted friend/coworker/family member to support you seeking help.

2. Know your local resources: depending on your location and situation, those could very
much differ. Learning about resources makes it easier to ask for help.

3. Utilize other help supports for referrals: you might be surprised how much your hair
dresser, dentist, pediatrician, nail tech knows about other sources of help.

4. If you ever find yourself in crisis, seek immediate support by visiting your local emergency
room or dialing 988.

There are plenty of things that you can do alone in life; don't let stress, worry, fear, access,
judgment or anything cause you to wait any longer.

You Matter, and you are not alone.
